Learn about Bridgeport:

Bridgeport's history began in 1860 when William H. Hunt was granted a charter to build a bridge across the West Fork of the Trinity River. The bridge was located approximately one mile southwest of the present townsite, and at the time there was a fee of one dollar as toll to cross the bridge. The bridge provided access for Butterfield Overland Mail that ended up having a short lived business due to the Civil War and the poorly constructed bridge having high traffic and construction issues. The bridge eventually collapsed due to the problems, and in 1873 a Decatur merchant by the name of Charles Cates, rebuilt the bridge for transporting supplies to Fort Richardson. The newly constructed bridge was built from iron and provided access for suppliers to transport their goods efficiently. The bridge became a landmark from which the small community of Bridgeport, TX was developed, surrounded by fertile soil, trees, waterways, and wildlife making it a prime location for settlement. In 1860 when Charles Cates was digging a well, he discovered coal that eventually formed the Wise County Coal Company 12 years later. Cates, along with J.H. Halsell, J.G Carpenter, Sam Levy, J.J. Long, Henry Greathouse, J.W. Hale, J.M. Holmes and Dan Waggoner developed the company to provide economic resources for the city. In 1893, Bridgeport's town center was relocated to have better access to the Rock Island Railway tracks that were implemented two miles east of the original town center. The city was established as a retail center for many farmers after the railroad was added, and in 1913 the city was finally incorporated. Over the years, Bridgeport has experienced many changes including increased infrastructure, added schools, parks, an airport, and a steady influx of businesses moving into the city. In its early history, Bridgeport ’s population was 1,872. Today, the city is home to over 5,300 citizens.
